The Marvel of Moldavite

Live from Gem Steady, it’s Saturday night! Tonight we are going to discuss a very special gem that you will not find buried deep beneath the earth’s crust. Our gem this week is Moldavite, and it is literally out of this world. The most popular theory for the origin of Moldavite is that a meteorite crashed into what is now the Bohemian Plateau, nearly 14.8 million years ago, creating a beautiful olive-green glass-like formation. Moldavite can only be mined in the Czech Republic and will be extinct one day. One should not let Moldavite’s rugged texture, and eerie extraterrestrial appearance keep them from reaping the positive benefits of this unique stone.
Moldavite is a wonderful stone for a worrywart who is trying to ease their weary tendencies. Our glassy-green stone has been said to repel needless worrying, and it helps to calm down an over-worked mind. Life will deliver miniscule setbacks that can send needless panic through our body, and corrupt our well-being. The easy-going nature of Moldavite can help prevent this from happening.
Moldavite has been said to be a comforting stone for those who are searching for their true meaning of existence. Moldavite can open one’s eyes to talents that once went unrecognized, and it can be a gem version of a guidance councilor. It can open one’s mind to experimenting with new hobbies and trades that may have seemed too difficult to try at first.
Moldavite can unearth one’s intuitive instincts and open the mind to events that have not yet happened. This stone will not exactly make you a psychic, but it can certainly help one tap into intuitive thoughts and help you pay closer attention to any “gut feelings”.
Our gem of the week is also great for those who keep emotions locked up tight and have difficulties discussing their problems with others. Moldavite makes talking about personal matters seem less daunting and can bring a lot of peace to one’s mind. This green gem can also help one to find beauty in all living things, and even in one’s own being. Moldavite can encourage comfort in one’s own skin and it can really help you learn to love yourself, and embrace your assets and flaws.

Tantalizing Tanzanite

Happy Saturday my gem-tastic audience! I figured you would all be out snagging black Friday bargains yesterday, so it seemed wise to post today instead. I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving, filled with joy and love, and I hope you all got to spend it with your loved ones. December is right around the corner and to celebrate, I am dedicating this post to Tanzanite, the December birthstone. This violet-blue marvel is ready to work wonders for you.
Tanzanite is an excellent stone for those who find it difficult to speak their mind, or speak in front of a large crowd. Are you too nervous to voice an opinion during a meeting? Grab some Tanzanite! Do your words turn to gibberish when speaking to your crush? You guessed it, wear some Tanzanite. The blue hue of Tanzanite opens the throat, which makes it a powerful gem for communication.
Tanzanite’s violet-blue tint can also inspire one to do charitable work. This gem will help you become selfless, and inspire you to put more emphasis on helping others and spreading good vibes. Tanzanite knows that truly happy souls are those who share as much love as they take. This is a great gem to embrace during the holiday season when those who are less fortunate need extra love. Pick up some Tanzanite and begin to spread good vibes like never before!
Tanzanite helps one to become a better listener and it provides a large dose of compassion. While listening to someone’s story of emotional trauma, Tanzanite can put you in that person's shoes and help you better interpret the situation with sympathy and a new point of view. This ability makes Tanzanite excellent for therapists, or anyone who wants to become a better listener.
Tanzanite can release feelings that have long been repressed and it can help one learn a lot about them selves. This makes the December birthstone excellent for college students searching for their true calling or anyone trying to choose a path that is right for them. Tanzanite can help one explore the deepest depths of their mind and this can lead to the discovery of one’s true passion.
Tanzanite is a very respectful and loving gem, and it is certainly not limited to helping those with December birthdays. Have you experienced the powers of tanzanite? Tell us about it!
Also, today is small business Saturday! What an excellent excuse to purchase some new gems from Gem Steady!

What gem would you like to learn about next week? let us know!

Have a wonderful day everyone and thank you for reading!

The Story Behind the Gems

The streets of Newport Kentucky can look bleak on an overcast November day, with the only burst of color coming from the rich-red stripes of Sweet Tooth Chocolate’s awning. The unglamorous sight of rusty trucks lined up on the street, worn down buildings and torn up concrete pollute the view from the sidewalk. In the midst of an industrial eye-sore, a gem appears. In this small town you will find the home of Brittany Stadtmiller and her husband Bobby, who, together create some of the most cutting edge pieces of jewelry this side of the Ohio River.
Upon entering the Stadtmiller’s home, a burst of aromatic and musky incense hits your nose, making you forget about the scent of industrial waste that lingers outside. Trance like music is playing on Brittany’s MacBook, and a sleepy pet possum is nearly hidden beneath a blanket on the couch. At age 29, Brittany Stadmiller can pull off the funkiest trends and still look effortlessly chic and not over the top. Tattoos of math equations and delicate pink roses dance flirtatiously up and down Stadtmiller’s muscular left arm. Her dark hair is pulled into an elegant bun, with a red scarf tied just behind her short bangs, which accentuates her strong, yet inviting smile. Brittany wears layers of body-hugging black clothing, which draw attention to her stacks of bold rings, and her signature chunky clear crystal necklace, dangling by a silver chain. “Her style is the perfect balance of unconventional and timeless elegance, and you can see this represented in any of Gem Steady’s pieces.” Said Madeleine Bransford, who has modeled for Gem Steady and is a huge fan of Stadtmiller’s raw and rustic looking designs.
Brittany grew up in Alexandria, KY where she was fond of rocks and gems from an early age. “I definitely ate some gravel as a child.” Said Stadtmiller. Brittany went on to study Japanese and Anthropology at the University of Kentucky, and she later moved to Atlanta to pursue a career as a life coach. Brittany came up with the phrase, Gem Steady, while living in Atlanta, before she caught the jewelry-making bug. “Gem Steady started as a life coaching mantra and a deliberate shift in Brittany’s worldview so she could improve her life and others’, from the inside out.” Said Betsy Schneider, Brittany’s sister.
According to Brittany’s Urban Dictionary definition of Gem Steady, it is all about focusing on the good, trying your best all the time and spreading positive energy. You only have to spend a few minutes with Brittany before you realize that she lives by this mantra. She knows how to stay calm, cool and collected even while dealing with the constant stress of owning a growing business. “I just like to focus on the good, I try my best and I know being mad and holding in anxiety or being in a hurry doesn’t really help accomplish anything.” Said Brittany.
The sun radiates through the blinds and brings the shelving unit filled with Brittany’s personal gem collection to life. Brittany shows me the beautiful chunky knuckle buster ring that turned out to be her first jewelry design. “I had it done by another jewelry artist in Atlanta” Said Brittany. “I designed a piece and had him make it. It was the very beginning of the whole jewelry making endeavor before Bobby and I took it on together.” Bobby came into the jewelry-making picture in the Fall of 2012, when he crafted a special gift for his soon to be wife. “Our wedding bands were the first rings that he made.” Said Brittany. It did not take a lot of convincing to persuade Bobby to pursue Gem Steady full time. “I have always built things, whether it be furniture, skate parks or hot wheel’s loops.” Said Bobby. “ I loved the idea of essentially bonding these pieces of metal together in a very small fashion versus welding or something of a large caliber like that.” The couple moved back to Northern KY in the Summer of 2013 where they constructed a bench jeweler facility between their living room and kitchen.
Owning a business with one’s significant other can lead to excessive bickering and a struggle for domination, but you will not see the Stadtmiller’s competing with each other over control of Gem Steady. “We need each other.” Said Brittany. “I need him because he produces and he needs me because he wouldn’t sell one single thing on his own. We possess different skills that compliment each other, so it works out really well.” Bobby enjoys collaborating with his wife and clients to create new pieces of jewelry. “We twist and we tie my ideas, her ideas and client’s ideas and we pull everything together, grab a little of this a little of that and make a sweet quiche.” Said Bobby.
Brittany and Bobby see each order as an opportunity to work together as a team and demonstrate their individual talents. Brittany does not hesitate to take charge of the marketing, customer service and most of the design portions of the business, and she has no plans to invade the construction part of Gem Steady. She has plenty of confidence that Bobby can bring her designs to life. “I always feel confident that whatever he produces is going to come out absolutely beautiful.” Said Brittany. “He has a good eye for detail so I am always really proud to show off all of his work.”
A seemingly never ending list of orders would leave one surprised to discover that Gem Steady is still a fledgling business that is less than a year old. “I was drawn to the whole jewelry making thing about a year ago and it has turned into this.” Said Brittany. Through the power of social media, Gem Steady experienced success practically over night. “I started posting on Instagram and Facebook, then I told friends and family and started spreading it that way.” Said Brittany “I think Instagram has been our best marketing tool so far and I am always trying to expand that.” Gem Steady has captured the attention of locally rooted folks and they have loyal fans as far away as Australia.
In less than a year Gem Steady has reached nearly 200 sales on their Etsy store alone and Gem Steady has reached over 1,200 followers on Instagram. Outstanding, personalized customer service and detailed craftsmanship have customers raving and returning for more Gem Steady pieces. “I am in constant contact with all of my clients, and I have one on one consultations with almost everybody if they get a custom design from us.” Said Brittany. “I like to follow up and make sure people are happy.” Brittany will even Skype with her customers to connect with them in a more personalized way than phone or email. “I think today, where people are so used to, press nine for English or automated things that the personal contact and customer service really make us stand out.” Said Brittany. Holly Bezold-Schweitzer, owner of a jewelry company and a long time friend of Brittany, recognizes something special about the dedication and passion that Brittany contributes to Gem Steady. “Brittany is a true gem herself.” Said Bezold-Schweitzer. “She will go the extra mile for her customer. She has talent and it shows in her designs.”
With each surge of popularity that Gem Steady receives, Brittany and Bobby are challenged to produce jewelry for their growing number of clients in a timely manner. Bobby is no stranger to slaving over his welding tools from dusk until dawn and he credits his countless cups of coffee for giving him the energy to make it through the day. “With Bobby being the only one making the stuff it can be a challenge to even keep what we have stocked.” Said Brittany. “In a years time I would definitely hope to see some change with that, whether we only sell in our own store and a select few others or hire more bench jewelers to help with the designs.” In addition to Gem Steady’s online Etsy store, Brittany is selling her pieces in five other stores, and she often has requests for custom made pieces.
There is clearly room for expansion in the Gem Steady brand, but for now the company remains firmly rooted in the Stadtmiller’s Northern KY home. In less than a year, Brittany Stadtmiller took her new interest in jewelry making and turned it into a successful business with endless support from her friends, family and husband. “Brittany is honest, she’s funny, slightly cut throat and slightly laid back.” Said Bobby. “ It’s a good mix and blend of wants, desires, thoughts and ideas.” Brittany predicts a substantial growth within her business in 2014, and she will have Bobby, friends, family, and her pet possum, Milkfoot, supporting her each step of the way. “I have a personal and professional friendship with her and it has been amazing to watch Brittany and her business grow into something extraordinary” Said Bezold-Schweitzer. “She is a very hard worker with true determination, passion and drive.”

Quartz Case

Happy Friday my Gem Steady fanatics! This post is of course dedicated to a gem worthy of our attention, but I have a little surprise for you all. I was assigned to write a profile article for my magazine class, and I chose to write a story on Gem Steady founder, Brittany C. I will be posting the article on this blog tomorrow morning so please check it out! I loved learning more about Brittany and her husband Bobby. In addition to being some of the nicest and most chill people I have ever met, they are really freakin interesting!
Our gem of the week can be found mingling with a 24 karat gold band and beneath our feet, deep within the Earth’s crust. This crystal is composed of titanium dioxide and comes in a wide array of color variations, all with rutile needles running through them. Today we are celebrating Rutilated Quartz and this magnificent beauty has a lot of wonderful benefits to offer us.
Rutilated Quartz is recognized for its ability to help one control their focus. In this day and age, we have countless distractions. So what if you have a paper due in 30 minutes? You also have access to social media, special interest websites, online shopping, texting, email and thousands of other distractions that lurk on the web and beyond. Even though we try to train ourselves that work comes first and playtime comes second, we are no match for the amount of distractions placed in front of us on a daily basis. Rutilated Quartz can combat this issue and retrain the mind to focus on one thing at a time.
Rutilated Quartz is a very stable gem, with a knack for digging up the root of an issue. This gem is fantastic for those with mental hang-ups that are not fully understandable. This gem allows one to sift through the depths of their mind, and it brings attention to forgotten memories and experiences that may be causing a pressing issue. This particular type of quartz can stabilize whacked out emotional feelings and help one to find inner peace. This leads to Rutilated Quartz warding off feelings of loneliness and depression. This gem will bring attention to ugly things within the mind that need to be dealt with, and the results are marvelous. Disposing of negative, ignored energy can give one a new found confidence, and a deep level of self-trust. Rutilated Quartz is aware that you need to understand your issues to solve them, and come out on top.
Our gem of the week has been said to give immune systems an extra boost and help the body absorb nutrients. I will be wearing Rutilated Quartz in place of a flu shot this year! Rutilated Quartz has also been said to decrease aging and can give its keeper a dose of youthfulness.
Rutilated Quartz can help cleanse us from the inside out and it has so much more to offer than beauty alone. Are you ready to bring Rutilated Quartz into your life? Cantact Gem Steady for available pieces.

Lusting Over Citrine

Happy Friday to all of you gem-thusiasts out there! This week, we are discussing a gorgeous gem that gives off a glow reminiscent of the golden Hawaiian sunrise. It comes at no surprise that our glowing goddess of a gem is the planetary stone for the sun sign, Virgo.  This sun-kissed stone was referred to as yellow quartz for thousands of years before it was given its official name in 1556, by German metallurgist Georg Bauer. Our gem this week is Citrine, and aside from its lovely sunny color, this gem has a lot to offer us.
Citrine’s energy is brighter than a ray of sunlight and it radiates positivity to all who embrace it. This sunny stone repels mean-spirited thoughts and releases wishes of vendetta and promotes cheerful thoughts and a positive outlook on life. Citrine is often referred to as the merchant’s stone, because it promotes success and can make one’s business more lucrative. Citrine has a strong combination of powers that help to make someone more successful. Citrine can help you radiate positivity, it can boost your confidence and it can trigger endless creative ideas. All of these qualities are great for being successful in the work place, whether you work at a large corporation, or if you are a small business owner.  Smuggle some Citrine into your next meeting and see what happens!
Citrine possesses the power to ease tension within a group and it prevents arguments from forming. It is especially good for resolving issues within a family. Are you dreading the thought of bickering family around the Thanksgiving dinner table? Be sure to bring along some Citrine to make your holidays run a little smoother.
Citrine enjoys playing matchmaker from time to time and can help one find a partner. We already know that Citrine can bring out our best qualities and make us radiate joy and confidence, so others are bound to notice. Looking for that special someone? Let Citrine join your next girl’s night out and watch as you become the belle of the ball(or rather, belle of the bar). Citrine is also an excellent stone for those who are deeply concerned about criticism. Citrine eases extreme sensitivity that some experience when negative energy is pointed their way and it can help one move away from these tendencies.
There are no boundaries when it comes to the age one must be to experience Citrine’s amazing healing properties. The gift of Citrine to a newborn baby endows the child with intelligence, confidence, curiosity and wisdom as he or she grows.
Whether you are looking to give Citrine to others or treat yourself to this glorious gem, look no further than Gem Steady! Do you have a special Citrine piece that has brought you good fortune? We would love to hear about it!

Totally Topaz

Happy Friday to all of you with a lust for gems! I would like to start by saying that I am overwhelmed with joy that November is here. I love knowing that all of the holidays and family gatherings are just around the corner! This post is dedicated to the November birthstone, Topaz. A hunk of Topaz that is free of any impurities will be crystal clear, however, it is more common to see this gem in shades of orange, blue, yellow and a rich wine color. Topaz can be harvested in Europe, Asia, South America and even right here in the United States. Topaz has been around for centuries and it was so popular in the Middle Ages that all resembling stones were also called Topaz.
The healing properties of Topaz vary based on its color. Goldish-yellow Topaz is an excellent gem for people wanting to liven up their social life. Yellow Topaz can help attract positive new friends and encourage healthy relationships in one’s life. This particular shade of Topaz can bring out your inner adventurer and it can encourage even the most timid of wall-flowers to take a few risks.
Blue Topaz is equally beneficial in its own way and it is especially good for those who have lived through a traumatic event. Blue Topaz has the ability to ease one’s fears and let go of negative memories. This special gem soothes a depressed spirit and can encourage those suffering from depression to let go of whatever is holding them back. Blue Topaz has been associated with speeding up the metabolism and it is a popular gem for weight loss and increased energy. Definitely throw some blue Topaz in your pocket before your next run!
Blue Topaz is also an excellent stone for artists and it is associated with stimulating creativity. This goes hand in hand with clear Topaz, which is an excellent learning gem. Clear Topaz can sharpen the mind and narrow one’s focus when they are trying to pick up a new skill. Green Topaz wants to keep any thoughts of seeking revenge on someone away. This shade of Topaz keeps you grounded and helps one stay level headed during tough situations.
Are you all dying to get your hands on some Topaz now? I know I am! Here is a great little addition for your Topaz collection, by Gem Steady of course!

Total Eclipse of the Heart(and sun)

Hybrid Solar Eclipse

Taurids Meteor Shower
Welcome to the Saturday edition of Gem Steady’s blog with Intern BB! Can you believe November is already here? As I mentioned in a previous post, we have some exciting things brewing above us in the sky. Tomorrow morning, around 6:30 a.m. the hybrid solar eclipse will be visible in North America. This eclipse is quite unique because it will start as an annular eclipse, develop into a total eclipse and fade back into an annular eclipse near the end.
A total eclipse is a beautiful natural accident that happens due to a perfect orbital plane intersection and just the right distance between the moon, earth and sun. The sun is much larger than the moon, however the moon is a lot closer to earth and when the distance is just right, the moon can appear to block out the sun completely. A total eclipse can be expected about every 20 months, but the viewing areas depend on where the moon casts its shadow. An annular eclipse is somewhat similar to a total eclipse, however the sun is not far enough from the moon to get completely blocked out. Lucky viewers of this type of eclipse can see a ring of fire, which is the sun peeking out from behind the moon.
The hybrid eclipse is rare because the annular eclipse turns into a total eclipse during different points of the eclipse path. While this eclipse is rare and beautiful, use caution while observing and do not look directly into the sun without protective eyewear. Eclipses are gorgeous after all, but I don’t want anyone to burn their peepers!
If you miss out on the eclipse early Sunday, you may catch bits of the taurids meteor shower Monday night through Tuesday morning. This shower produces no more than 20 meteors per hour, however, taurids has been known to produce surprisingly bright balls of fire, so it is worth looking for. It can be difficult to pinpoint a peak time for this meteor shower, but it is predicted to be just after midnight and a few hours past on Tuesday morning.
Will you be looking for the hybrid eclipse or the taurids meteor shower? Share all of your star gazing pics and experiences with us!

Thank you all for reading and may the rest of your weekend be wonderful!

The Poise of Turquoise

It is Friday once again my rockin-rock fans and it is time to talk about some pretty jewels and gems. Our gem this week is a stunning bluish-green stone that has been widely popular since ancient times. Turquoise is the ravishing star of this post and it was coveted in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia and the Indus Valley. In ancient times, Turquoise was regarded as an elaborate stone that decorated mosques, swords, masks, jewelry and even Tutankhamun’s tomb. In earlier years, Turquoise defended its owner from the threat of an unnatural death. Turquoise was and still is a very important stone in Native American culture and the gem has protected burial sites and adorned priests while performing ceremonies. Turquoise is still a fantastic stone for protection, but it has a wider range of usage these days.
Those who keep Turquoise close by tend to put out a peaceful aura and have a serene outlook on life. Mimicking the colors of the rolling blue sea, Turquoise is wonderful for busy bodies who cannot seem to find a source of relaxation. Adorn yourself with Turquoise to experience the natural calm of this stone.
Turquoise works beautifully to balance out the mind and soul. Turquoise repels moodiness, negativity and helps one to make sensible, smart decisions. Our lovely gem can help make its keeper be more comfortable in their own skin and it is a major confidence booster. Turquoise is magnificent for the nervous soul that struggles with striking up conversations, public speaking and interacting with strangers.
Much like its use in ancient times, turquoise remains a powerful protecting stone. The beaming blue gem protects against evil energy and creates a shield of sorts within the mind to keep bad energy from seeping in.
Turquoise likes to play doctor from time to time and it is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and it can actually help the body absorb nutrients. Turquoise can work magic on sore and achy muscles and is a fabulous stone for pain relief. Keep turquoise handy after a long day of work and let it soothe your soreness away.
So, there you have it. Turquoise is not only a gorgeous gem that has been vastly coveted for centuries, but it has an array of healing effects on the mind and body too.
Are you a fan of Turquoise? Send us a shot of your favorite Turquoise piece! The Hybrid Eclipse is just around the corner and so is the Taurids Meteor Shower so come back tomorrow for a special star gazing post!

Beautiful Inside and Out

Happy Friday to all of my Gem Steady gem-thusiasts(new gem puns)! This post is inspired by Brittany C’s recent haul of gorgeous dendrite quartz, so lets discover the history and healing power of these little beauties. Dendrites are very special crystals because there is a happy little surprise inside and that surprise happens to be a mini garden of sorts. That’s right, plant motifs decorate these delicate little stones. However, these mini branches, leaves and trees are not what they seem. What appears to be fossilized plants beneath dendrite’s clear surface is actually the work of inorganic manganese oxide.
When iron and moisture find themselves trapped inside of the quartz, a staining process begins, creating patterns that appear to be fossilized plants. While they may not be legit fossils, dendrites are magnificently beautiful with a hefty variety of healing powers.
Dendrites are the stone to turn to when you feel engulfed by modern-day burdens. Sometimes we need a break from all of the iPhones, Facebook, tablets and other technology(except this blog… you need this blog!). Dendrite quartz will bring you back to nature and help you reconnect with earth and the outdoors.
Dendrite quartz has a drive for eliminating the artificial elements in one’s life and it has the ability to make a person see what really matters. When someone erases a trivial element of their life, such as a daily frappe, it can seem nearly unbearable. However, erasing something more valuable such as a family member will make you forget all about that frappe(even though they are delicious). Dendrite quartz wants to bring its keeper to this realization that trivial things are not of great value and more appreciation should be directed toward truly important things and people.
Our pal dendrite really values the importance of spending time with family and some believe that it can strengthen bonds with loved ones and even revive estranged relationships. Dendrite is one of the most positive crystals you could ever hope to meet and it has the power to ease tension between two people who are not on the best terms. It is great for those hoping to revive a friendship that was once strong.
Dendrite quartz allows the ability to erase a troubled past and turn over a new, positive leaf. This stone has been very popular for those with a troubled childhood or teenage years. Everyone deserves a second chance at happiness, according to dendrite.  Dendrite quartz is also known to bring prosperity and achievement to one’s career. This is a fantastic stone to keep in your office desk or wear to meetings.
Dendrite is certainly a positive stone that promotes healthy relationships, with people and the planet and it is fantastic for those hoping to get more out of their career. Contact Gem Steady for available dendrite pieces and let these little beauties work some magic in your life!

It's Raining Stars

Hello my gem(and space) enthusiasts! As you may remember from my last post, this is a very special week, because the sky is being splattered with balls of fire from the constellation known as Orion. The Orionids Meteor Shower has been enchanting the sky for over 200 years and it is known to last a full week, including a peak day when the most meteors can be seen. Even though the peak date of October 21 has past, lets review some interesting trivia about the Orionids.
When Halley’s Comet passes by the sun on its 75-76 year orbit, bits off ice melt away from the comet, allowing rock particles to separate. This process is the origin of the Orionids Meteor Shower. It’s almost like seeing little baby versions of Halley’s Comet dart across the sky!
The Orionids are speedy little fire-balls that topple down to earth’s atmosphere at nearly 150,000 mph. Due to their lightning-fast speed, these meteors can leave trails of light behind as they shoot across the sky. At the meteor shower’s peak time, one can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour. On October 20 there were 15 meteors reported by SpaceWeather.com. Despite threats of a too-bright moon and pesky clouds, the Orionids stood up to its competitors and put on quite the show.
If you did not catch the Orionids Meteor Shower and you just cannot wait a year to see a few shooting stars of your own, do not fear! Debris from Halley’s Comet produces another annual meteor shower in May called the Eta Aquarids.
Stay tuned for information about the upcoming hybrid solar eclipse, which will happen on November 3 and the following day will bring the Taurids Meteor Shower. The Taurids is not quite the meteor-making machine that Orionids is, but it is still an excellent excuse to star gaze. Are you looking forward to any space related events in the upcoming months? Be sure to post any pictures or experiences of the Orionids Meteor Shower and come back on Friday for our weekly gem!
*Star gazing tip* If you are in a light polluted city, try to escape to a dimmer setting so you can score the best star gazing seat in the house!

Have a fantastic week everyone!

Howlin' at the Moon

Happy Friday my gem-tastic readers! This post is going to be a little different because the rock we are talking about is slightly larger than your average gem. This rock is nocturnal and it was once thought to be made of cheese. The moon is our honorary gem of the week, to celebrate the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse that will happen tonight!
Gaze out your windows tonight and you might see the full moon with a slight, spooky shadow on its lower half. This shadow comes courtesy of Earth, because the moon will be passing through Earth’s penumbral shadow. Tonight, Earth, the sun and the moon will be ever so slightly more out of alignment than they would be in a partial eclipse. This causes a light darkening of the moon. Some lucky folks may even get to see the moon take on a spooky reddish tint as a result of the eclipse. When the sun is filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, it drains any blue light and replaces it with red.
For most of North America, the maximum effect of the eclipse will be most visible for us around 8 p.m. and close to sunset and moon-rise. Unfortunately for West-Coasters, the eclipse will be over before the moon rises and the East Coast will have the best seat in the house… Well, at least in North America. The best viewing place for the Penumbral Eclipse will be in Brazil, Europe and Africa. Will you be looking for the Penumbral Eclipse tonight?
If your luck has run dry and you miss the Penumbral Eclipse tonight, you still have a chance to catch a glimpse of the Orionids Meteor Shower, which will begin Monday night. While the nearly full moon will be blocking the dimmer meteors, the brightest and biggest will still be visible. The meteors will be darting through the sky all night and the best viewing time will be after midnight and before dawn. Shall we use this as an excuse to skip any Tuesday morning obligations? I think so!
I will be posting a reminder plus fun facts about the Orionids Meteor Shower on Monday so stay tuned and whip out your sky-gazing gear! Hey all of you photographers out there, be sure to send us your best moon pictures. We would love to see them! Also, my favorite holiday is coming up… Halloween! So show me some spooky spirit and share your favorite creepy costume and party ideas!

Falling for Fluorite

Happy Friday my fantastic gem fanatics! I have been in Destin FL this week and I have to say, there is nothing like star/moon gazing on an empty beach at night. I will be sure to post a few moon photos in the next week. Whether I am on the road or back in Cincinnati, I certainly cannot forget about our weekly gem, which happens to be Fluorite this week.
This vibrant little mineral is composed of calcium fluoride and is quite a versatile gem. Fluorite is used in the production of certain telescopes, microscopes and is popular in the jewelry and healing world as well. Fluorite is quite unique because it is often found with multiple colors in one stone and just about every color of the rainbow can be represented in Fluorite.
Fluorite is known as a “genius stone” because it is one smart cookie of a gem. Fluorite can sense unwanted energy and does not think twice before vacuuming it up and getting rid of it. Our colorful crystal is perfect for anyone who is feeling closed-minded. Fluorite will open you up to new experiences and opportunities because it enhances one’s ability to see the big picture rather than viewing the world inside of the box. Fluorite can also help you become wiser in situations involving intense emotions. Fluorite knows that it can be difficult to think straight when your feelings are running rampant, and it helps you step back and view the situation objectively.
Fluorite is known as a balancing crystal, meaning it balances the negative and positive energy within the body, mind and soul creating a peaceful sensation for its keeper. Fluorite is kind of like having a guard dog, only in gem form. It wants to protect you from using bad judgment while under pressure and it fights manipulation from others trying to cause harm. Fluorite is an excellent stone for students or anyone trying to learn a new skill because it helps you grasp abstract concepts and it helps you think on your feet.
Fluorite is a very friendly gem because it actually helps other gems become extra powerful. In other words, if your meditative stones are acting a tad sluggish, they may need a boost from Fluorite. So, now it is easy to see why Fluorite is known as a genius stone. It can solve just about any problem!
Do you have a favorite Fluorite piece? Need one made? Gem Steady has you covered!

Rich With Rubies

Happy Friday my gem-loving pals! Before we discuss this week’s glorious gem, I wanted to let you all know that we have some exciting celestial events coming up in October. October 18 is the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, which will cause the full moon to darken. Let’s hope for a clear night so we can enjoy it! A few days later on October 21 we will experience the Orionids Meteor Shower, caused by leftover dust from Halley’s comet. There will be special posts about these events in the coming weeks so check back often!
This week Gem Steady is seeing red, because our gem of the week is the Ruby! Rubies are related to Sapphires because they both are gem-quality corundum and they are both richly pigmented precious stones. A Ruby’s color can range from panther pink, to a deep blood red. Most Rubies come with imperfections and when a flawless Ruby is found, it demands a price higher than a Diamond. Even though the little red charmer has a few flaws, our dear friend Ruby is truly beautiful. Just ask the Chinese Emperor, Kublai Khan from the 10th century. The guy traded an entire city for a fiery red Ruby.
Throughout history, the precious Ruby has been said to bring nobility, love and success to its keeper. Rubies are just as powerful today as they were in ancient times. The vibrant red rock is known for promoting stamina and vitality. This stone packs a lot of energy and power so keep a Ruby close by when you engage in physical activity.
Ruby is a fantastic stone for the lethargic or tired folk. The next time your to do list extends to the ground and you feel like being a couch potato, place a Ruby around your neck and accomplish your tasks with ease.
So, Ruby definitely wants you to be an active, healthy, and productive individual, but it has a special power that is especially useful during the month of October. Rubies have been said to neutralize the sensation of fear when encountering something paranormal, evil, or unusual. Are you too jumpy for a night of haunted houses and ghost tours with your buddies? Keep a Ruby in your pocket and the ghosts and goblins will seem harmless as a fuzzy kitten.
Are you in need of a new Ruby to increase your stamina, fight off your inner scaredy cat and most importantly to look stunning on your finger? Look no further than Gem Steady’s Etsy!
Thank you all for reading! Do you have a favorite Ruby piece? Tell us about it!

Ring of Fire

Happy Friday my Gem Steady loves! Brittany C. and the Whittle Master made a few gem-tastic purchases lately that have me oh so inspired. Opal, in my opinion is one of the most fascinating gemstones around. Their sparkling multi-colored flecks glisten like the star speckled sky and is oddly enough formed out of hydrated silica. Opal comes from a land down under and is the official gemstone of Australia, which happens to produce 97% of the world’s supply of this dazzling rock.  The base-color of Opal can be clear, white, gray, magenta, green and blue to name a few and the most coveted colors are red against black. There are two types of Opal. Precious Opal has an array of color specks while common Opal is often opaque.
Opal is sought after for its beauty, and during the Middle Ages it was coveted for its ability to bring good luck. Back then you wouldn’t find a rabbit’s foot nestled in the pocket of one’s britches. You would find their lucky Opal! The Opal was considered lucky because of the multi-colored flecks that supposedly represented other gemstones. The more colors within the Opal, the luckier it was.  A slightly stranger use for the stone during this time was invisibility. Some souls believed that an Opal wrapped in a fresh bay leaf, could be used as a cloak of invisibility while nestled in one’s palm. Sadly, there is no historic evidence to back this claim(otherwise I’d be stocking up on Opal and bay leaves!).
Jump forward to present day and the Opal still has a vast amount of uses and healing properties. Opal is closely connected with the human mind. It has the ability to enhance memory, and bump up creative juices.
Some may refer to Opal as a classier mood ring, because it reflects the mood of whoever is wearing it. Sensitive souls may experience greater sensations from Opal because it is a stone ripe with emotions. However, Opal’s emotional tendencies do not make it a weak or timid stone. In fact, Opal encourages its owner to be independent and original. Not to mention it encourages confidence in one’s own skin. Let a few Opals dangle from your ear lobes and discover your full potential and feel a sense of self-worth like never before.
So, Opal can make you feel pretty darn good about yourself, but did you know it can help you make others feel real good too? Opal is a stone used for heat and passion. Opal is sensual and enticing and it makes an excellent piece for the hopeless romantic. Wear Opal on your next date to test out its full romantic abilities.
I know you are all dying to get your paws on some Opal now; I am too! Head over to Gem Steady’s Etsy for available pieces and custom pieces.

That Darn Garnet

Happy Friday my lovely Gem Steadies! Lets use this glorious morning as an excuse to gab about some pretty rocks. We are dedicating this post the January birthstone, Garnet. This special mineral has been swooned over for its natural beauty since the Bronze Age. While many know Garnet as a deep red rock, other varieties can be found in green, pink, orange, brown and the rarest of them all, blue. Garnet can be a real trickster when it comes to a true color because certain varieties, such as blue Garnet can change color in incandescent light. What a color chameleon!
So, Garnet is a beautiful gem and with its ability to change color it could land a day job as a magician, but this little mineral contains deeper powers too. Garnet is a multi-tasker with a wide array benefits and solutions for both physical and mental health. In Medieval times, Garnet played a big role in medicine and it was known for healing hemorrhages and inflammation. Some may consider Garnet as the ancient version of a protein powder. It was very popular to wear a bit of Garnet before engaging in physical activity because the stone has been said to boost endurance and strength. I’ll be sure to toss a few garnets in my gym bag prior to my next sweat session.
Garnet is not only a fantastic workout buddy, it is also a great business partner, especially if your business is people-oriented. Garnet is said to increase one’s confidence and people skills, causing others to be attracted to the Garnet-clad soul. If you want to be Miss(or Mister) popular around your office, be sure to wear some Garnet to your next meeting.
Garnet is a very positive stone, as we already know and perhaps its greatest strength is helping those suffering from depression. Our sweet little stone likes to find the root of one’s unhappiness and kick it to the curb. It digs through your mind, picking up any negative thoughts along the way, throws them in trash bag and sends them packing. Wearing Garnet is a good way to become a balanced, level-headed individual. Garnet knows that too much of anything is not healthy and it encourages an easy-going, relaxed manner. Garnet is not exactly a hippy, but it certainly is one mellow dude.
Our marvelous Garnet certainly is an admirable gem and would make one fabulous best friend(if it became human). Do you need a rock that is a popular, non-dramatic workout buddy that wants you to strive in the workplace? Gem Steady has you covered! Check out this ring and don’t be shy to ask about custom pieces!
Now tell us all about your positive experiences with Garnet!

Fit for a Queen

Happy Friday lovely Gem Steadies! I would like to start by sending out a big happy birthday to Gem Steady Queen, Brittany C! In honor of Brittany C’s Friday the 13th birthday, we are going to examine the dazzling world of Sapphires, which happen to be the September birthstone. The Sapphire’s blue hue possesses a striking resemblance to the ocean’s depths and is just as luxurious as a bejeweled crown nestled atop a fine silk pillow. One look at one of these lapis lovelies will leave you memorized. Wrap a Sapphire around your finger and you will feel down right royal.
The luxurious Sapphire has a history that certainly holds up to its beauty. Kings and queens of ancient Rome and Greece adorned themselves in Sapphires to ward off envy and harm. During Medieval times the Sapphire fulfilled a similar purpose for the wealthy, giving its owner protection and wisdom. Fast forward to slightly more recent times, when Prince Charles gifted Diana Spencer with a marvelous Sapphire engagement ring, which she adored according to reports. Now this is one seriously royal stone!
Nearly every well-established religion has held a special use for the Sapphire, which is easily understood considering the stone can enhance faith and sincerity. Buddhists saw the Sapphire as a source of spiritual enlightenment, while Hindus used the beautiful blue gems in offerings to align astrological influences. Christians made ecclesiastical rings with Sapphires, because they symbolized chastity.
Luckily for everyone who is not royal or super devout, Sapphires are still waiting to work magic on you too. Sapphire’s are little blue geniuses that can provide their keeper with wisdom and serious book smarts, and even just simple common sense. Slip on some Sapphire before making an important decision and during exam week. Sapphire can be like X-ray glasses. It helps one to see the underlying truth beneath a big messy pile of lies.
Our royal gem Sapphire is fabulous for the goal-oriented soul, as it increases organizational skills and determination. Sapphire is almost like a big breath of fresh air. It can clear the mind and can make the messiest of situations an orderly one.
Getting engaged soon? Sapphire is a very romantic gem and it encourages love and honesty, making it a wonderful choice for an engagement ring. Even if you are not in love, chances are you could fall in love with Sapphire. Embrace Sapphire as the marvelous, wise, focused stone it is and reap the benefits for a lifetime.

Motivated: How To Get and Stay There. PART ONE.

Motivation can be a tricky thing if not applied regularly.
We all have things that we wish to do or accomplish, but we lack or THINK we lack the discipline or motivation to get there. You may aspire to run your own business, pursue a healthier lifestyle, or have better relationships. Maybe you wish to write and publish your own novel, take up running, or travel some place on your bucket list. I'm sure we've all heard someone (maybe even yourself) say something along the lines of, 'I wish I could loose 10 pounds, find a new job, start knitting sweaters for cats.... but I don't have the discipline/self control/motivaton. Boo-Hoo. Whoa-is-me.'

I am here to tell you that we all possess discipline, self control, and motivation. It is inside of every single one of us somewhere. But it's our choice whether or not we use it. If you want something bad enough you WILL make it happen. If you don't want it bad enough....well. It won't.

Motivation has two mortal enemies.
Doubt. And excuses.

In part one of this blog we're going to break down doubt and excuses and expose the truth and lies behind them both.

DOUBT.
Doubt has a way of getting in our heads and tainting what would've been perfectly good thoughts and actions. Doubt can alter the energy of your work and interactions. Doubt can be seen, felt, and heard if it is present. And doubt will certainly devour motivation if allowed to take over.

Doubt and lack of confidence are fraternal twins. Often times, when we doubt ourselves it is a result of low self esteem and poor confidence. Posture and body language are indicators of ones level of confidence. If you could use a boost; try making a conscious effort to sit and stand up straight. A small adjustment like this can lead to big changes in how you operate.

Try making habits of writing down the things you like about yourself, or give yourself a pat on the back when you've accomplished a goal. If you catch yourself thinking something negative redirect those thoughts to something positive. Hang around people who make you feel good and encourage you to try new things. Stay away from energy vampires.

If you want something you have to first believe you can have it. If you allow yourself to doubt this certain thing is attainable, the chances of you getting it will decreases immensely. Think positive!

EXCUSES.
Now to excuses.... Excuses are pounds of lies with just a sprinkle of truth on top to make it seem more ok. Excuses are the lead cause of procrastination, and the justification of lazy and morose behavior. I'm sure you've heard some of these before...

"I'll strive for my goals one day but I've had a bad week, so now I'm going to do nothing to better myself and wallow in self pity. I deserve 12 months of unproductive self loathing because  blah...blah...blah...."

"This person made me upset earlier. I don't care if I am training for a marathon, I'm going to eat this entire pizza and down a couple forties because I have the sads. I'll make up for it tomorrow."

"It's Friday."

"It's Saturday."

"It's Sunday."

"It's Monday."

"Tuesday's I like to lay on the couch and shove pie in my face because I'm still devastated about Monday."

"It's Wednesday."

"It's Thursday."

"I'll start Monday."

Excuses are good for nothing except causing us to plateau. In order to defeat the excuse, we must first admit to ourselves that we are making them. Write down your excuses and expose them for what they are. LIES. Find out what you can do to help benefit yourself instead of making the excuse. Yes. maybe you did have a rough week and feeling all sorry for yourself and drowning the pain with a couple sixers of Zimas with Jolly ranchers seems easy and warranted. Think again. What could you do to help yourself  here instead? How can your filter your emotions into something productive?

Recognize the excuse. Kill the excuse. Cultivate the better person within.

Ok.
Now that we've touched on a couple of the motivation killers, let's take some time to recognize where we can clean some things up in our lives to make room for success. What are your goals? What is the first step to achieving this goal? Is doubt or an excuse in the way of you taking this first step?

Thanks for reading this weeks post. Part Two will dig deeper into helping you get and stay motivated. I look forward to your questions and comments in the section below.
